About Roberta
Roberta’s life is and always has been all about dance & movement. She started dancing at the ripe young age of 3! That is why she calls her company and her web site LifeDances. This is her 15th proud and grateful year teaching Nia, and her 8th year leading White Belt Intensive Training.
After attending the University of Illinois as a dance major, she moved to NYC to study with the finest teachers in the U.S. at that time. She came to Canada to dance with La Groupe de La Place Royale, a modern dance company, and later formed her own dance company. In the 80′s she stopped dancing professionally to focus on raising her two beautiful sons. Roberta completed a diploma in Wellness and Lifestyle Management at Centennial College, taught fitness and wellness programs in women’s fitness clubs for 16 years. Then one day, a student told her about Nia. She insisted that she go and learn about Nia and bring it into Canada. The great thing about Nia is that it is the fusion of all her passions: movement, dance, fitness, music, helping and healing.
Roberta is thrilled to be a part of this eloquent movement technique and personal growth process. Nia allows her to dance with JOY everyday of her life with educational support, variety, safety, creativity and grace. She is happy to be able to share all that she has learned with you!

INSTRUCTORS:

Janet Ragan is a mother, wife, teacher, friend of the Earth, and lover of music, dance and the arts. She came to Guelph like so many to study at University of Guelph and eventually completed a Bachelor of Science in Applied Human Nutrition. Four children later, she put her education on hold and became involved in other activities – she coached gymnastics at the Guelph Saultos Gymnastics Club, instructed pre and postnatal fitness classes, dance and Nia. She eventually became a high school science teacher, a job she loved and was challenged by. She turned to technology to solve some of these challenges and now she teaches educators and students to apply assistive technology in the classroom. She is dedicated to helping others find fulfillment in mind, body and spirit through music, art, and movement as well as healing our planet through the tender loving care that we are all capable of. Anja Gurnig, Nia Green Belt
While exploring the benefits of Yoga, Anja came across her first Nia teacher, Tanya Armstrong, who strongly influenced her with her beautiful and honest creativity and encouraged her to further educate herself to deepen her Nia experience.
In December 2006, Anja participated in the Nia Master Classes in Toronto held by Debbie and Carlos Rosas, the founders of the Nia Technique. Further inspired by this event, Anja completed the Nia White Belt teacher intensive training conducted by Black Belt Teacher Trainer Martha Randall in March 2007.
Anja is a proud member of Niac, the Nia Instructor Association of Canada. She beliefs in regular joy- and playful practice, continuous learning and skill upgrading to deliver the Nia promise. So far she has participated in intensive Nia work- and playshops with Nia co-founder Carlos Aya Rosas, Black Belts Zeta Gaudet, Martha Randall, Winalee Zeeb, Brown Belts Janet Ragan and Lainie Magidsohn.

WHAT IS NIA?
Nia is a blissful and inspirational movement form that is packed with power. Raw, uninhibited dance and martial art movements choreographed to the sounds of world music.
Awaken. Experience. Move. Be Moved.
The Technique
“Nia is movement medicine for the body and soul…”
Nia simultaneously addresses the body, mind, emotions, and spirit, and puts them on the “same page” using music, movement and personal expression to integrate one’s neurology (including the mind, emotions, and spirit) with one’s outer body, or musculature. To achieve this whole-being integration, Nia addresses the whole person using a comprehensive, holistic excercise approach designed with a combination of nine classic movement forms.
NIA BLENDS NINE MOVEMENT FORMS
Martial Arts: T’ai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido
Dance Arts: Jazz Dance, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance
Healing Arts: Yoga, Alexander Technique, The Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais
Nia teaches you how to physically interpret and internally direct your actions and choices, and to listen to the voice of your body and allow the body to be your guide in discovering Dynamic Ease. Practiced barefoot to music, Nia is self-guided, adaptable and safe for any fitness level, from stiff beginners to highly fit athletes. Delivering cardiovscular, whole-body conditioning, Nia is based on creating a loving relationship with the body and following The Body’s Way – the innate intelligence of the body.
